What Should Our Family Wear?

November 16, 2020  •  Leave a Comment

I am often asked what to wear for a family photo session.  The anxiety of coordinating a family's outfits so they are flattering and visually pleasing is REAL.

I know because I feel it as a mom when coordinating outfits for my own family.

Pick out colors YOU like and consider where you may display your portraits in your home.  Bright spring colors will not be visually appealing in an earth tone room.

I recommend picking three colors: two primary colors and one accent color and mixing those with each family member.

Once we have colors in mind, mom should start with her outfit FIRST.  She should pick an outfit that makes her feel as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside.

I do this for a few of reasons:

1. We all need a starting point.

2.  If mom is comfortable and feels confident everyone else in the family will follow along.

3. It is so much easier to coordinate the littles and Dad to Mom's outfit than for Mom to try to find an outfit that matches everyone else.

As moms, we often like to fade into the background or hide behind our clothing.  Trust me when I say this is NOT the time.  You do not want to lose your waist underneath that flowing dress or hide underneath an oversized turtleneck.

Seize your family portrait as an opportunity to pick an outfit that makes you feel GORGEOUS.The next step should be picking out the girls' outfits.

Add a cardigan, tights, hair bow, or jewelry that coordinate with your color selection.  This gives unity to an image without everyone being too "matchy."  Bold prints should be reserved for wee little ones or skipped completely.

The girls are ready to go so now move on to Dad and the boys.  Solid pants, a coordinating golf shirt or button down are the easiest of everyone's outfits to pull together. You can also add sweaters, jackets and/or ties depending on the formality of your look.

Another pro tip to keep in mind is to layer your look.  For example, you might add a sweater, scarf, or jewelry to add texture.

Finally, lay it all out on the bed to see how they all blend together.  This will give you a visual of how the outfits will look and give you an opportunity to make any adjustments prior to your family session.

If you are still in doubt, send me a quick phone pic and I will gladly reaffirm your choices or make any tweaks.  I love working with clients to help them create beautiful selections for their portraits.

Having a roadmap makes the process SO MUCH easier.
